Boat travel is truly the best way to experience the Maldives. With over 1,000 islands scattered across the turquoise Indian Ocean, hopping from one to another feels like a dreamy adventure. We booked a traditional dhoni boat for our explorations, and the gentle sway of the water and the salty breeze made every journey feel magical.
The best part? We could enjoy stunning views of the coral reefs and the vibrant marine life beneath the surface as we traveled.
One of our first stops was Hulhumalé Island , known for its stunning beaches and vibrant local life. The island is perfect for a day trip, where we soaked up the sun and explored its bustling markets. Open year-round, this paradise offers free access to its beaches, making it an ideal spot for sunbathing and relaxation.
Next, we ventured to Maafushi Island , famous for its water sports and lively atmosphere. We rented a kayak for just $10, paddling through crystal-clear waters, and marveled at the scenic beauty surrounding us. The island also offers guided snorkeling tours, starting around $25, allowing us to swim alongside colorful fish and vibrant coral.
Don’t miss a trip to Banana Reef , one of the most popular dive sites in the Maldives. We booked a dive package for $60, which included equipment rental and an experienced instructor. The underwater world here is breathtaking, with vibrant coral formations and a myriad of fish species, making it a highlight of our journey.
No trip to the Maldives would be complete without indulging in local cuisine. We sampled Mas Huni , a traditional Maldivian dish made of tuna, coconut, onion, and chili, which is typically enjoyed for breakfast. It costs around $4 at local cafés, and trust us, it’s worth every bite!
For lunch, we found ourselves at a beachside shack where we enjoyed Garudhiya , a fish soup served with rice, lime, and onions. This dish was both comforting and refreshing, costing around $5. We also couldn’t resist trying the local Maldivian curry for dinner, which varied in price from $10 to $15, depending on the restaurant. The rich flavors and aromatic spices were a delightful end to our adventurous days.
As we continued our boat journey, we were lucky enough to experience the vibrant local culture. We visited Thulusdhoo Island , where we watched locals produce traditional crafts and even participated in a coconut husking demonstration! This was a fantastic way to connect with the locals and learn more about their way of life.
