All kinds of flowers have thousands of gestures, but they are always moving, and they can always bring unexpected joy to our lives.
Buying a bouquet can bring you a good mood anytime, anywhere. But how to maintain delicate flowers, increase the fresh-keeping time of the flowers, prolong the life of the flowers, and keep them blooming for a few more days?
This article will bring you some tips on how to keep flowers fresh so that our home vase flower arrangements can be as delicate as the flowers in the flower shop!
1. Choose your favorite flowers
First of all, according to your preferences, choose the flowers that match your style. Different flowers have different fresh-keeping lifespans. Before purchasing, you must first understand the vase period of various flowers.
Due to different flower species, the length of the vase planting period is also different.
For example, the vase period of fresh cut flower poppies is only 2 to 3 days, while the vase period of leaf material Nandina can be up to about 1 month.
When choosing flower materials, you can choose flowers with slightly open flowers at 1-2 degrees, and flower branches with buds waiting to be released at the same time.
Flowers that are already in full bloom, or flowering branches that are close to full bloom are not suitable for purchase, and the vase-planting period is short.
2. Trim the flowers
Before bottle planting, it is necessary to prune excess branches and leaves, and prune the roots at an angle of 45 degrees to increase the water absorption area of the branches, so that the branches can better absorb water and prolong the fresh-keeping period of flowers. The best time to prune is in the early morning.
Use sharp scissors (sterilized before pruning) to cut off excess leaves and branches to ensure that the leaves will not be immersed in water when the bottle is inserted. Generally, grasses and flowers should be cut diagonally and the incision opened, and woody flowers should be directly folded. A few tips are recommended:
Heat treatment method:
Flowers with a lot of juice, such as poinsettia, should not be inserted into the water immediately after pruning. You need to burn the cut surface on the flame, then cut off the burnt part, then sterilize and wash it with water, and finally insert it into the water to prevent it from withering due to the loss of too much juice.
End-crushing method:
When dealing with woody flowers such as magnolia, lilac, peony, etc., 3-4cm at the end of the flower branch can be gently crushed to expand the water absorption surface and prolong the life of the flower arrangement.
3. Home vase flower arrangement water, water change
For family flower arrangements, it is best to use river water, rainwater, or well water directly close to the indoor temperature. If tap water is used, it needs to be left for about a day.
The water needs to be changed frequently, usually every 2 to 3 days. When changing the water, clean up the residual leaves and prune the branches again.
If the air is relatively dry, you can spray water around the flowers to increase the air humidity (do not spray water directly on the flower heads).
4. Placement of home vase arrangement
Flower arrangements should not be placed in direct sunlight, and should not be placed near the air-conditioning vents, otherwise, the flowers will easily wither.
At the same time, it is not advisable to place flower arrangements near mature fruits, otherwise, it will accelerate the shedding of petals and accelerate the decline of flowers.
5. White sugar preservation
What many people don't know is that adding an appropriate amount of sugar to the water can keep the cut flowers fresh.
Generally speaking, about 1000ml of water is enough to put one to two tablespoons (teaspoons) of white sugar. Appropriate sugar can nourish flowers and prolong their blooming time.
Of course, when using this method, because the bacteria are easy to breed in the sugar environment, it can be used with carbendazim solution or potassium permanganate solution at the same time to play the role of disinfection and sterilization.
