Mercy Baggs, a senior citizen from Wiltshire, England, is 90 years old this year, but the thrill-seeker believes her life has only just begun at age 60, having completed two skydives in the past 13 years, according to an Oct. 23 report in the British newspaper Metro.
It is reported that Mercy completed her first skydive at the age of 77 and later her second at the age of 89. Mercy is now dedicated to encouraging other people over 55 to live their own lives as she did.
She feels that people should never give up on themselves at any point in their lives. In her opinion, life starts at 60 and age is just a number. Don't let anyone influence you and make you feel that you can't do anything when you are older.
Although Mercy had a surgery in 2007 to remove two tumors from her spine, she was determined to continue living the most fulfilling life for her. A few years after her surgery, the retired police officer began planning to fulfill her desire to sky dive. She describes,
"Before the jump, when the hatch is just opening, it's very windy and cold outside, blowing us around, but gradually you start to enjoy the process. It's a moment when you're really skydiving, the moment the parachute suddenly opens and you see everything below, it's a very exhilarating experience, unparalleled."
Mercy is not stopping skydiving just yet, as she plans to make her third high jump on her 95th birthday. In addition, she is involved in a campaign to encourage people over the age of 55 to strive to live their lives and achieve their dreams.
What is skydiving?
Extreme skydiving is a sport in which parachutes are used to jump from high altitudes. The skydiver rises to a high altitude in an aircraft, balloon or other equipment and jumps, or jumps from the top of a steep hill or high ground, and completes various prescribed actions before and after opening the parachute with the help of aerodynamic force and the parachute, and uses the parachute to slow down the descent to land safely in the designated area.
It is known as the "sport of the brave" for its own thrill and challenge.
Parachute jumping can be done from a variety of aircraft in flight, as well as from equipment fixed at high places, steep mountain tops, high ground and even buildings. As an aviation sport, parachuting has been commonly carried out in many countries around the world since the end of the 18th century, especially in Europe and the United States, where it is more widely practiced.
At present, skydiving has become one of the most fashionable extreme sports for young people. Like soaring eagles, from thousands of meters, or even tens of thousands of meters high sky dive down, it is difficult to imagine which there is a more exciting entertainment than parachuting.
